Customization, Implementation, Integration of Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), $6.5MM, Two Year Project
Client:
Major North American Steel Manufacturer
Goal:
This leading steel manufacturer was faced with climbing costs, increased breakdowns and an aging work force that through retirements was losing essential knowledge of how to operate and maintain the plant. The goal was to implement a CMMS that would capture the knowledge of maintenance processes and implement automated routines that would provide scheduled and appropriate maintenance to the heavy equipment. At the same time this project had to integrate to both new Financial and Manufacturing systems that were also being developed and implemented in parallel.
Process Improvement:
Document all of the current processes and knowledge. Analyze documented information and develop Best Practice processes for computerized maintenance.
Action:
Roeder Consulting addressed both structure and people.
Structure: The company was restructured to take advantage of the new processes. Maintenance teams were created to take advantage of knowledge and skills using the new systems capabilities.
People: Teams made up of users from the maintenance division, operating division, finance and IT were formed to participate in all aspects and phases of the project. All maintenance people were trained as required in the new processes and functionality.
Results:
Maintenance costs and unplanned outages both decreased significantly as a result of this 21 month process improvement strategic initiative. Further, this customization, implementation and integration of the CMMS was delivered on-time and on-budget.
